WHY THE RIGHT TILE BACKER BOARD IS CRITICAL

WHY THE RIGHT TILE BACKER BOARD IS CRITICAL

How many ways have you seen backer board used?

We’ve seen it applied throughout the house: ceilings, countertops, subfloors, in laundry rooms, in place of drywall, and in bathrooms (of course), just to name a few. And why not? A good XPS tile backer board, like KBRS’ new KBoard, is waterproof, sturdy, and easy to cut and handle. Builders, contractors, and DIYers agree; it’s a great building material for all around the job site, which is even more reason to choose the right brand.

Backer Board is Too Important to Leak

Tile backer board has one job … don't leak! In the shower, bath, and wet rooms, we trust you have the right shower pan in place, but making sure the walls are watertight is just as important. KBRS’ KBoard is manufactured with a waterproof proprietary blend of synthetic polymer mortar and an alkali-resistant fiber mesh. The moisture-management aspect may be less critical when the board is used in areas not exposed to water, but for typical applications, it's essential for the tile backer board to be waterproof.

Backer Board Needs to be Strong

The last thing you want is to install a tile backer board that doesn’t stand up to the pressure. It needs to be strong enough to support the weight of the tile and fixtures, support the nails and screws being used to keep it in place, and even stand up to the work crew walking over it during installation! Considering gypsum board? Don’t expect it to stand up like the highly rigid structure and exceptional bonding strength of KBoard.

Are you using the smaller, lightweight, trendy, and popular mosaic tiles for you shower walls? You will need a STRONG foundation to adhere it to, not a flimsy shower board with no structural value.  An alternative might be less expensive, but there is a reason for that. If you are using your backer board for not just what it is intended for, but for other uses as well, consider the product and material choice carefully.

Backer Board Needs to be Easy to Handle

Many bathrooms and laundry rooms are upstairs. So having a backer board that is easy to carry and install is important. Even at 3’x5’, an XPS backer board like KBoard weighs in at less than 11 lbs., making it easy carry multiple boards to wherever they are needed. And without the itchy fiberglass additive to worry about, gloves are not necessarily needed for handling and installation.

No matter where you are using your backer board materials – from walk-in showers to the insulation and water barrier for a new doghouse – it needs to be strong, easily managed, and functional at every turn. With its special properties, KBRS’ KBoard has a wide variety of applications. Use it as a carrier element, as an adhesive surface, for moisture protection, as a design feature, for composite sealing and more.
